Washoe County Student Honored

A Reluctant Flower - Drawing by
Angel Hernandez selected to represent NV at DC exhibition ~ Teacher Heidi
Fishel and Angel Hernandez meeting with NV Senator Harry Reid
Angel Hernandez, an 8 year old student at Esther Bennett Elementary School along with his classroom teacher, Heidi Fishel, were greeted by Nevada Senator Harry Reid during a trip to Washington, D.C., last month. Angel’s art, “A Reluctant Flower” was chosen to represent VSA arts of Nevada in the “Celebrating Who I Am” part of “All Kids Can…CREATE!” program initiative from VSA arts and CVS Caremark.
The exhibition featured one piece of art from each state plus the District of Columbia. The call
for art invited all children to create a piece of visual art inspired by their interests, talents, and dreams, and to post their work to an online gallery. Out of the 51 children whose artwork was on display, 11 representative students were selected to travel to Washington, D.C., to be honored at a reception on Capitol Hill. Angel and Ms. Fishel represented VSA arts of Nevada.
During the 2008-09 school year, Angel and his fellow classmates were part of VSA arts of Nevada’s arts in education program conducted in
special education classrooms in Washoe and Carson City. VSA arts of Nevada’s teaching artist Susan Sullivan instructed Angel’s class in the use of several different mediums during 18 visual art workshops. The
2008-2009 VSA arts of Nevada arts in education program included both visual and performing art workshops
and was sponsored by VSA arts, the City of Reno, NV Energy, Alliance with the Washoe County Medical
Society and the “Rich in Art” license plate. With additional funding, this program will continue during the 2009-2010 school year.
